Digital Nomads 2/3: Learn your goals & live your values

Reading time 4 minutes

Timo Eckhardt and Sascha Boampong are digital nomads and have arrived at their destination: They can work freely and independently from wherever they want. All the more exciting, then, that they now spend most of their time in their office in Hamburg. Why is that? In an interview, digital nomad Timo Eckhardt reveals: "Many people decide to become digital nomads out of lack. If their job doesn't meet their expectations, they quit it and travel around the world. But what many underestimate in the process: If they don't work on themselves while traveling, they'll eventually end up back in a job they don't like." Timo and Sasha's credo: "Know your purpose and live your values!"

According to the podcast expert, it is important not to view digital nomadism as the final solution, but to work on oneself during this time and find out what one's own goals and values are. According to the two entrepreneurs, the biggest danger lies in mediocrity. Timo Eckhardt: "If something is okay, then you don't change anything. That's why many who want to change something come from lack. You have to go out and work on yourself." When you're at peace with yourself, happiness no longer depends on full-time travel. And that's exactly why the two are spending a lot of time in Hamburg again. They are content and feel comfortable in the Hanseatic city.

Digital nomads: Trend or more?

But let's get down to brass tacks: Is digital nomadism just a passing trend that represents a currently much sought-after lifestyle model? Or is digital nomadism a way of life with a future that will become even more prevalent in the future? Sascha Boampong: "That depends on the core values of each individual. If freedom is important to you, you might like to work from a different location. But that's not the case for everyone. Digital nomadism is not a panacea. There are also people who like to go to the office to separate work and leisure."

So the answer depends on your individual basic intention. Not everyone wants to work from everywhere. So the basis is always that you are at peace with yourself. Where you work from is then completely secondary. Sascha Boampong: "If you are happy with yourself and live your values, then you don't care so much about commuting from A to B anymore. Being a digital nomad means changing your environment. But if the play is a drama, then it remains a drama even if you play it on a different stage. Digital nomadism shouldn't be an escape. We perceive it as a trend, but it's actually a first step towards coming to terms with oneself."

The path to digital nomadism

If you too are toying with the idea of working from anywhere in the world as a digital nomad, you should first ask yourself the following question:

  • Do you want to work location-independently as an employee?
  • Or would you like to meet with your start your own business?

If the former is the case, you should have good arguments ready to convince your boss. Because superiors usually have Fear from loss of control. For example, argue that you are much more productive from a home office. If location-independent working is not possible at your current employer, you should see if there are other companies that offer this form of working.

According to Sascha Boampong, the great thing about self-employment is that you don't have to jump in at the deep end. He reports: "I have part-time self-employed and continued to work full-time for years. I was gradually able to reduce the hours I worked in my permanent job. Self-employment is a development and sometimes takes a while to get off the ground. Starting your own business part-time is therefore completely risk-free. It's important to realize that you can build something up on the side and don't have to jump in at the deep end overnight."

Digital Nomad: Work online from anywhere

But what if you have a job that requires your presence? Doctors, police officers, janitors and bakers can't just work from anywhere, they have to be on site. Timo Eckhardt: "There are lots of jobs for which you don't need any training and which you can start straight away. Or you can change your current job into a job that you can do from anywhere. A typical entry-level job, for example, is virtual assistant. Virtual assistants do research, customer support, or similar areas for other self-employed people."

So you can and should be creative. While you can't do all jobs 1:1 from anywhere in the world, you can find similar jobs or share your knowledge elsewhere for pay, for example in the form of online courses and online seminars.
