How much can you earn as a coach in different fields?

If you are interested in the career of a coach, the question of the possible salary will certainly occupy you. How much a coach earns, however, is not so easy to answer. It is a complex topic in which numerous factors play a role.

For one thing, you can specialize as a coach. Some topics are more in demand than others, but the trend can change quickly. Secondly, your salary as a coach depends largely on yourself! In other words: your expertise and your appearance. If you make a name for yourself in the industry and are often recommended to others, you will earn significantly more than someone with whom clients are only moderately satisfied.

Experience also plays a role: Shortly after completing your training, you will earn less than a coach who already has years of professional experience. In the following article, we will take a detailed look at these and other important salary factors. In addition, you will learn how you can pave the way to an attractive salary.

What does a coach earn in Germany and abroad?

The Average earnings of a coach in Germany and Europe amounts to approximately 75,000 euros per year. In America it is even up to 80,000 euros.

However, the values can vary significantly upwards or downwards in individual cases. As a self-employed coach, you set your own hourly rate. The latter applies both in Germany and abroad.

For beginners, an hourly wage of 60 euros has proven successful. Avoid dumping prices, otherwise you create a dubious impression. According to the motto: What costs nothing, can't be worth much. With only 10 clients per week you would earn 600 Euros in this way, which corresponds to a monthly income of 2400 Euros. Experienced coaches can estimate a higher hourly wage.

Salaried coaches in Germany earn an average of 3,350 euros gross per month. However, there can be fluctuations here as well. Large companies with over 1,000 employees usually pay their internal coaches a higher salary than small companies. After ten years of professional experience, the salary can increase to around 4,000 euros.

Tip: Your average earning potential varies from state to state. We will now take a closer look at where you have particularly good earning opportunities and where they are rather low.

Is every coach self-employed?

As briefly mentioned earlier, coaches need to not necessarily be self-employed. They can also work for a company on a permanent basis. In this case, they receive a fixed monthly salary and work exclusively for their employer. Both self-employment and employment have their advantages and disadvantages.

The main advantage of being an employee is the fixed monthly salary. Salaried coaches do not need to worry about the order situation, whereas self-employed coaches have to constantly monitor the market. However, the earning potential is also limited to the agreed monthly salary. After a few years, salary increases are possible on a negotiated basis.

Successful (!) self-employed people can earn much more. The more positive references you collect, the faster you can raise your hourly rate. A sought-after coach can easily charge 100 to 150 Euros per hour, which corresponds to monthly earnings of up to 6000 Euros with ten clients per week. However, keep in mind that this is not (yet) realistic as a beginner.

Self-employed or employed: Which option is right for you?

Which of the two options is right for you depends on your ideas and requirements. Employed coaches can be either internal or external. Internal coaches are long-term employees or managers of a company who have received further training from their employer. They then take up their coaching activities.

External coaches must already have completed training. Depending on the company, a degree, a minimum age and / or many years of professional experience are also required. Whether the employer should employ you permanently or whether you should remain self-employed depends, among other things, on the duration of the planned collaboration.

If the employer wishes a long-term cooperation, which would leave no more capacity for other clients, a permanent position is to be considered with correspondingly good remuneration. Nevertheless, most coaches are and remain self-employed.

Important to know: Employed coaches usually deal exclusively with business topics. Certainly, there are also companies that make use of other types of coaching (e.g. fitness or nutrition coaches). However, this tends to be the exception. If you are not interested in business, you are better off as a self-employed coach.

How do I find employment?

If you want to apply for a permanent position as a coach, this works just like any other job. Check the job ads on the usual portals and apply according to the specifications. In most cases, the expected salary is also listed so that you can compare. You can find a suitable place to start here,

How does specialization affect salary?

Coaches support people in different life situations. After successful basic training, you should therefore take the opportunity to specialize in one or more areas. You may also have completed a special training at the same time.

Regardless of the coaching direction, as a self-employed coach you set your own hourly rate. Therefore, it is impossible to say in which area you earn more or less. Your earnings depend on the number of clients you have and your experience! However, some types of coaching are used more often than others. The larger the target group, the higher the potential earnings.

We have therefore compiled a selection of the most popular types of coaching below:

  • life coaching
  • mental coaching
  • Agile Coaching
  • Systemic Coaching
  • Nutrition Coaching
  • Children's Coaching
  • business coaching
  • NLP Coaching

In addition to the popular types of coaching just listed, there are of course "niche topics" where you don't have to fear big competition, but can only count on a small clientele. A low demand goes hand in hand with a lower earning potential.

Tip: If you want to make a living from your coaching, you should at least combine the niche area with a popular type of coaching.

Less frequently used types of coaching include:

  • Philosophical Coaching
  • Wellness Coaching
  • Marriage Coaching
  • Presence Coaching
  • Anti-bullying coaching
  • Anti-Burnout Coaching
  • Recreational Coaching

What interpersonal skills does a good coach need?

A good coach succeeds in motivating and inspiring his clients. However, you do not lay down rules, but give help to help yourself. For this you need Self-confidence and authenticity. Only when the client senses that you yourself are convinced of your work will he or she be able to really engage in the coaching.

As a coach, you deal with the problems and Needs of other people. empathy and empathy are therefore indispensable. You need to be able to take your client's concerns seriously, even if you don't understand all of their points of view. A certain amount of patience is also required. Sometimes it takes time to make progress.

It goes without saying that a flawless Communication skills another basic requirement for a successful coach. Words have tremendous power. They can both build and destroy. If you and your client constantly talk past each other or misunderstandings arise, the coaching misses its purpose.

What professional requirements does a good coach need?

The professional skills you need as a coach ideally include vocational training or a degree in your respective coaching field. If you want to work as a fitness coach, for example, trainer's certificates and licenses will look good on your resume. As a mental or life coach a degree in psychology is an advantage.

We remind you again: The more expertise you have, the higher your hourly rate will be.

Furthermore, it is important that you have the ability to reflect on yourself. Take stock regularly: What is going well and where is there room for improvement? Ask your clients to give you feedback on this. Make sure that you continue your education as a coach on a regular basis. Stay versatile and deepen your psychological knowledge.

Are you still considering whether a career as a coach is right for you? Then you can our article help to get more clarity about it.

What does coaching have to do with psychology?

A coaching offer - regardless of the area - is basically aimed at psychologically healthy people who want to develop personally and improve their quality of life. Coaching does not replace psychotherapy in any case. Nevertheless, psychological knowledge is an advantage for every coach.

The goal of coaching is ultimately to recognize and break through behavioral patterns that interfere with the client's happiness in life. Why do people always act in a certain way, even though they should know better? By helping your client to reflect on themselves, they will achieve their desired goals.

Sometimes it is the non-verbal signals that provide information about the cause of the problems. Good coaches should therefore be attentive observers and know how to interpret these signals. Furthermore, it is essential to be informed about the legal basics in the world of work so as not to inadvertently give the client the wrong advice.

Why is a sound basic training so important?

Since the job title is not protected, there are no uniform training guidelines. So theoretically, anyone could call themselves a coach. This makes the whole matter a little more complicated. Your goal is to distinguish yourself as an expert from a large number of lay people. For this, as already explained, relevant professional experience in the respective coaching area is a great advantage.

Nevertheless, please by no means forgo an additional well-founded Coaching training! The fact that there is no uniform line does not mean that there is a lack of professional training offers. Make sure to complete your training with a certified provider, e.g. ils, IHK or Greator.

A training course with a provider from the woods and meadows, of which no one has ever heard, makes you look dubious. The latter reduces your earning potential.

If you want to live off your earnings as a coach later on, you'll need to invest time and energy. In the Coaching training you will learn the necessary skills to work successfully with clients. Theoretical expertise is not enough! Anyone who advises their clients in an amateurish manner will not be able to stay in the highly competitive market for long. Bad advice gets around. But so does good coaching!

Coaching as a vocation

As an established coach, you can earn a really substantial income. There is absolutely no question about that. However, if you are looking for quick and easy money, you should rather look into other industries. If you decide to pursue a career as a coach, you must believe in it wholeheartedly. Your clients will sense this! The earning potential should not be the main argument.

Helping people become the best version of themselves can feel incredibly fulfilling. Provided this is what you want, coaching is right for you.

Does working as a coach have long-term future prospects?

Earning a high income as a coach today is all well and good - but what will it look like tomorrow? The current trend is that coaching will play an increasingly important role in the future. The demand for coaching opportunities in all areas of life is growing continuously. From this it can be concluded that in ten years coaches will be able to earn an even higher salary than today.

The future prospects in the coaching industry are ideal to plan for the long term. This is mainly because more and more people want to make the most of themselves. The times when only executives were coached have long been a thing of the past. Everyday topics such as crisis management, partnership and health are increasingly moving into the coaching focus.

In the course of globalization, intercultural coaching, which deals with intercultural values, is becoming increasingly popular. Of course, cross-cultural coaching methods are also used here. Keeping yourself up to date in terms of content and technology is a basic requirement for a successful coach.
