Leadership: Make an impact and a difference with your employees

You may have heard the term leadership used in connection with different leadership styles. If so, you may remember that leadership refers to Visions and motivation. If you can't quite remember or have never heard of leadership, here's a little digression for you. Have fun!

Leadership Definition: What is it?

The term leadership, according to Business Lexicon not uniformly defines the people-, behavior-, trait-, interaction-, and/or motivation-oriented tasks of management.

Traditionally viewed from the perspective of business administration, leadership is primarily required for the analytical skills needed to plan organization, structure, processes and capacities. However, crisis situations and phases of far-reaching change make it particularly clear that not only the derivation, but above all the implementation of decisions can be a central management challenge.

Accordingly, leadership on the one hand includes characteristics (e.g. Charismapersonality, sympathy) and, on the other hand, skills (e.g., motivational ability, rhetoric, persuasiveness) that result in interaction-related and behavior-influencing management competence as central characteristics of leadership.

Leadership

Leadership: The goal is the goal

It's true that in the leadership style, for once, the journey is not the destination. The work is primarily geared to where we want to go - in other words, to the meaning and the direction. The path is rather unimportant. The main thing is to achieve the goal.

Bosses who apply the Leadership model communicate visions and act as role models. Because they themselves are one hundred percent convinced of their plans, they pass this on to their team in a credible and authentic way. They burn for their ideas - that's contagious! As a result, their employees often have above-average motivation and enjoy following their bosses. For many managers who follow other models, this is a true dream.

Especially good works the model Leadership, by the way, in start-ups and smaller companies with a manageable number of employees. But a leadership mentality can also be maintained in large corporations if there is a strong corporate culture.

Differences between management and leadership

Real experts probably already know that leadership could be called the counterpart of the management model. This is also a popular management model, but it differs significantly from leadership. In "The Günter Principle for Business", Dr. Stefan Frädrich skilfully summarises the main differences between managers and leaders. Want a few examples? Gladly:

Management focuses on the path, leadership on the goal. A good manager has the processes in mind, while a leader has meaning and direction. Managers concentrate on systems and structures, while leaders focus on people. The manager wants to do things right, the leader wants to do the right things. Where the manager maintains the status quo, the leader challenges it.

The manager has his eyes on the balance sheet, the leader on the horizon. A manager asks "How?" and "When?", the leader "What?" and "What for?". So the manager maintains and manages, while the leader develops and innovates. Managers think in the short term, leaders in the long term. The manager relies on control, the leader inspires confidence. Because the manager is the classic soldier, he is a kind of copy. The leader, however, is completely himself, he is an original.

What makes a good leader tick?

Some people are born for this position. What makes a good leader tick - we show you 5 behaviors!

  1. Leaders are therefore quite motivated and focused. This begs the question, can't you take a more relaxed approach to your leadership lifestyle? In other words, why should you? Your Motivation after all, doesn't stem from a desire for looseness. You want to do a good job - that's important to you. And you gain motivation and energy from the goals and meaning of your work - and from the work itself.
  2. In addition to being highly self-motivated and energetic, leaders fulfill another requirement for being good bosses: they want to lead other peopleand in such a way that the right results come out. That means taking responsibility. After all, results don't just fall into your lap. You have to do something for them - and sometimes something unpleasant, tedious and difficult. Something that many prefer to shirk. Something that requires leaders. In other words, people who are willing to set the direction and empower other people to do the right thing.
  3. A leader does not simply work according to a pattern, does not think along predefined lines and is certainly not shy and reserved. Instead, he thinks and acts entrepreneurially; his magic word is "Initiative". After all, he wants to create something with his leadership method and not just manage it.
  4. For him, taking the initiative means: start! And with what is necessary to achieve his goal. A leader does not wait for someone else to give the go-ahead, but takes responsibility himself. He believes that he can make a difference and move things.
  5. And a good leader knows that if he doesn't initiate a process himself, no one else will do it for him - he could wait forever for that. But he doesn't want to do that, so he tackles it himself. It is clear to him that if you want results tomorrow, you have to act today. Because it's always about the future today. It's about shaping what is to become.

The leadership style of tomorrow?

The strength of a leader, then, lies in his or her unbridled motivation and desire to lead others as well as to work together to create a Achieve goal. He can make them themselves Assume responsibility and achieve the desired results. If the leader achieves this, he has done a good job. If he does not, he has done a bad job.

Some even consider leadership to be the leadership style of the future. And indeed, traditional leadership styles, in which an authoritarian boss wields power and spreads fear and terror, seem to be becoming increasingly unpopular. Many people want Self-realization in the job. They want to be able to participate in decision-making and identify with their employer.

Can good leadership be learned?

Of course! If you're ready for it and feel like you're really on fire for it, that's the best prerequisite. You can start learning leadership at any time. One way is to approach your boss openly. Tell him about your desire, ask him in which area you could take on more responsibility. And work your way up step by step. You will gain experience and become a good leader through trial-and-error after several years.

Another option is to find someone whose experience you can benefit from. This can be a mentor or a coach who accompanies you over a fixed period of time and on general or specific topics. A business coach, for example, will reflect on your leadership behavior and work with you on your strengths and weaknesses.
